Schaefer’s was founded in 1946 as a corner drug store in downtown (13th & F) Lincoln, Nebraska by David Schaefer and his son-in-law Frank Romero. In the mid-fifties, Frank Romero added a small TV department to the drug store. With the advent of color television, this department grew to be one of the fastest growing television stores in the area.
1972 Ron Romero, Frank’s son, joined the Company and soon added appliances, making Schaefer’s a full-line television and appliance store. Also at this time, the drug store portion of the business was discontinued, and an extensive remodel/expansion of the building occurred.
August of 1982, a second company was founded, Schaefer’s Appliance Service Center, Inc. This company operates as a separate cooperation and functions as Schaefer’s own appliance service company. The service center also reconditions and sells this these appliances at its location.
October of 1983, a second retail location in mid-town (48th & R), Lincoln, Nebraska was purchased for appliance and television sales. June of 1989, remodeling and expansion began on this building taking the facility from 5,000 sq. ft. to 22,000 sq. ft. Remodeling included a complete facelift both inside and outside making it a complete new “super” store.
In the fall of 1990, it was recognized that the new store was outpacing the store at 13th & F Streets, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to merchandise two separate retail locations. It was decided to consolidate both locations into the new “super” store at 48th & R Street. Summer of 1992, once again, Schaefer’s underwent remodeling and expansion to add a complete home audio department and home theater room.
November 2000, it was realized Schaefer’s had outgrown its warehouse facilities as well as its appliance service center facilities. Schaefer’s purchased a new building at 601 N. 66th Street, which afforded the company over 33,000 sq. ft. of space. The warehouse facilities and service center were moved to this location, and remains its current location.
November 2007, after years of remodeling and expansion at 48th & R it was realized that Schaefer’s needed an even, bigger facility. Schaefer’s found a new home just across the street at 4700 R Street. This new location allowed Schaefer’s over 30,000 sq. ft. of space and the ability to create an interactive experience for our customers.
May 2011, Schaefer's added mattresses to an already enormous product offering. The Sleep Gallery at Schaefer's was designed with comfort & relaxation in mind. A beautiful department & our no-hassle approach to bedding sales has made Schaefer's one of the bedding destinations in the area!
December 2011, launched Schaefer's first e-commerce website offering our entire inventory for sale online. Different than most "catalog" websites- schaeferstv.com offers products that we keep in stock, are priced current, and offer Schaefer's exclusive educational content to help our customers make better buying decisions.
